"I just wanted to see if you'd sold the stock like we agreed."
"I did. I'm still waiting for the check. When it comes I'll send you your half. Just like I told you the last time you asked me."
"Oh, yeah. I remember now." Rich's voice held a distracted note, and he stared past her left shoulder.
Turning, D.J. looked behind her, half expecting to see Josie hovering in the air. The guardian angel might be worth all the trouble if she gave Rich a few nightmares. Maybe D.J. could get Josie to pay Rich a little visit in the dead of nightjust for fun. But there was no sign of Josiejust McCall, poking his head out of the examining room door and looking around the room for her. He smiled when his gaze encountered hers, and the rest of his body slipped through the doorway.
D.J. returned her attention to Rich, intent on making him disappear before she had to perform an introduction between the two men. But her ex-husband had taken care of the disappearing act on his own. Weird. When Rich was on the hunt for money he usually pestered her until she came up with some. It wasn't like him to fade away before he needled her awhile. He'd never forgiven her for calling the police the day he'd finally given into his anger and hit her in the mouth after she smarted off one time too many. Instead of taking the abuse like the good little wife he'd expected her to become D.J. had called Lou and then filed charges. She'd dropped the charges when Rich agreed to a quick and easy divorce.
